Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling? Top 5 Causes, Freezer vs Fridge Symptoms & Solutions

A refrigerator cooling failure is an urgent household emergency, especially in Mumbai’s warm and humid climate where dairy, vegetables, and cooked food can spoil within hours. The most baffling complaint we receive at our Mira Road East center is: "My freezer is freezing ice cream perfectly, but the bottom fresh-food cabinet is completely warm!"

Here are the top 5 mechanical and electrical reasons why Whirlpool refrigerators stop cooling, along with practical troubleshooting steps.

1. Defrost System Failure (Ice Dam Blocking Air Vents)

In frost-free double door and triple door refrigerators, cold air is manufactured strictly in the freezer by the evaporator coil. An automatic defrost timer activates a heating element every 8 hours to melt accumulated frost. If the defrost timer, bimetal thermostat, or thermal fuse fails, ice builds up into a solid wall over the cooling fins.

  • Symptom: Freezer is icy cold, but no cold air blows through the tower vents into the lower vegetable and bottle rack.
  • Temporary Fix: Unplug the refrigerator and leave both doors open for 24 hours to completely melt the internal ice dam.
  • Permanent Fix: Replace the defective mechanical defrost timer or bimetal thermostat switch with an original Whirlpool component.

2. Evaporator Fan Motor Jammed or Burned Out

The small circulation fan behind the freezer back panel pushes cold air through internal ducts down into the fresh food section. If ice jams the fan blades or the fan motor coil burns out, the refrigerator cannot distribute chilled air. If you open the freezer door and do not hear the gentle whirring of the fan (or if it makes a buzzing or rattling noise), the motor must be inspected.

3. Heavy Dust & Pet Hair on Condenser Coils

The black snake-like coils on the back or bottom of the refrigerator radiate extracted heat into the room. If thick carpets of dust, lint, and pet hair insulate these coils, the compressor cannot dissipate heat, triggering thermal overload and reducing cooling by 50% or more. Clean the coils using a vacuum cleaner brush attachment twice a year.

4. Compressor PTC Start Relay & Overload Protector

If your refrigerator clicks every few minutes followed by complete silence, the compressor is attempting to kick on but failing. In 80% of these cases, the compressor itself is unharmed; the inexpensive PTC ceramic start relay plugged into the compressor terminal has cracked from electrical surges. Replacing the relay restores cooling instantly.

5. Refrigerant Gas Loss (Pinhole Copper Leak)

If both the freezer and the lower cabinet are warm, and the compressor is running continuously without cooling, your cooling system has lost its eco-friendly R600a or R134a refrigerant charge. Our technicians pressurize the lines with dry nitrogen, detect the micro-leak with soapy bubbles, silver-braze the joint, replace the filter drier, and recharge fresh refrigerant to manufacturer specifications.
